Hey, have you heard of the ‘third space’?
It’s what they’re now calling the car (yep there’s a new name for everything these days) — because it’s the place that bridges our work and home.
Due to the pandemic, there’s been a bit of a shift in the functionality of the car. We’ve now started using them as much for living as we do for traveling; hence the ‘third space’. Think drive-in movies and takeout at a beautiful spot, social isolation from strangers at its best. A night out that stays in the car has actually become quite normal.
And let’s not even talk about the number of TikTok videos we see created in cars, this space is becoming as much a part of our ‘social’ environment than any other.
Even when the pandemic is over, there’s a feeling this trend is only going to continue as we move towards a driverless future; giving us the opportunity to use our travel time for other activities. In fact, the auto industry has already put the wheels in motion (yes, pun intended) to develop these spaces beyond anything we see today. The future could be a car loaded with multi-screens, selfie cameras, docking stations, and creature comforts, as well as drive-live-concerts in the backseat and personalised arcades — all plans currently being worked on you know!
The vision is the third space will no longer be for driving, but rather living.
What do you think, would you spend more time in the car if it was turned into a traveling oasis of your favourite pastimes? And what would you like to see developed for your third space?
Buckle up,
Jem
